4.4: An Introduction to the Routing & Remote Access Service
In Windows server 2003 RRAS is a multi-protocol software router which can be configured for LAN to LAN, LAN to WAN, Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and Network Address Translation (NAT) routing through IP networks, however the number of network segments available will be limited to the number of installed and configured network adapter interfaces. Other RRAS features are available which will be reviewed in later sections of this course
NOTE: RRAS is incorporated in Windows server 2003 but is NOT enabled by default
To configure RRAS for LAN network routing:
-
Open 'Routing and Remote Access' from the Administrative Tools menu.
-
Right-click on the Windows server 2003 and choose 'Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access'
-
Select 'The Custom Configuration' option from the list, then click Next
-
Select the 'LAN Routing' check box, then click Next
-
Click on Finish then 'Yes' to start the service.
NOTE: All static routes configures with RRAS are persistent routes
